“The three sexes of Dictyostelium discoideum”

The molecular genetics of sex determination are understood in a handful of well-studied species, but across many branches of the eukaryotic tree almost nothing is known. Many protists have unusual-seeming sexual cycles: for instance the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum forms cannibalistic zygotes and has three stably inherited sexes. We recently discovered the genetic locus responsible for sex determination in this organism, and showed that it has three forms, one of which resembles a composite of the other two. The proteins encoded by the locus are novel, but the key genes appear to act as master regulators, similar to those important in sex determination in other eukaryotes. I will discuss recent work further characterizing this system, and highlight some of the puzzles that remain to be solved.
