In this program, we teach and perform research in a wide range of specialist fields including environmental chemistry, plasma chemistry, catalytic chemistry, organic precision compounds, macro-molecular compounds, organic and inorganic materials, and optical functional materials. We foster the ability to do creative work in the field of applied chemistry by using the knowledge acquired in under-graduate courses as the foundation, with the goal of cultivating the leadership skills for a researcher or technologist. Within this division, there are research departments for organic synthetic chemistry, macromolecular chemistry, inorganic industrial chemistry, and industrial physical chemistry, and research and instruction is offered for graduate students in each of these sections.
In the first stage of the doctoral program, there is a fulltime instructor plus lecturers from other divisions, laboratories, and faculties. Normally, lectures are given by a single instructor, but for some subjects round-table discussions are held. Currently there are lectures in 10 subjects for 20 credits, including exercises in 4 subjects for 4 credits, and with the required subjects and subjects from other divisions, there are a total of 30 credits required to complete the program.
In the second stage of the doctoral program, 30 credits are required, including the credits earned in the first stage of the doctoral program. With a focus on research, we provide an environment in which students can reach a higher level. There is a working-student entrance system for both the stages and a system to assist them.

- Distinguished students can receive a doctorate in 2 years
- Three years after entering the program, every student receives a doctorate degree. Normally, completion requires 3 years of participation, but for exceptional research, a doctorate may be awarded in 2 years. So far, 1 person has received a doctorate under this system.
- Stimulating research presentations
- The master’s thesis presentations are jointly conducted with the chemistry division of the Master’s in Science and Technology program with the aim of molding researchers with a broad range of knowledge. Several dozens of theses presentations and oral presentations are held each year in Japan and overseas.
